March, April, May,... Home?

So since last week it's May and with that the last month of my stay in America. It kind of scares me and I have the feeling there is still so much to do I can't fi in these last three weeks. One of my friends, she was staying in Great Britain over the last school year is already going home next Tuesday! That made me realizing how close I am to the end of this schoolyear...

Go away!!

The last weeks I kind of realized that WI does not stand for "WIsconsin"... Nope, it obviously stands for WInter because we still get new snow over night and even had a snowday last week. I just say it again: It is mid- April ... In Germany they have 20 degrees Celcius right now :D

And there was PROM...

How could I not write an article about the biggest event of the year?! I just can't! Last week-end we finally had prom (April 6th), which is a very early date for this event because school ends in the beginning of June here and usually they have it end of April or even in May. But anyway... the week before I finally got my shoes I was going to wear for pictures and so on. Because I didn't wear high heels for homecoming I was like: Then I should wear some for prom... and so I bought shoes with at least 4 inches of heels. Maybe not the best idea how I should later realize...

Valentines Funeral

I know everybody , who is reading the heading is probably surprised, why the words funeral and valentines day are put together... It has the reason, that the Grandfather of my hostsisters was dieing this Monday. He had the funeral on Thursday. So we ent to the Cities on Wednesday and being there until Thursday, which was February the 14th; Valentines day. So it was a "Valentines funeral" for me...

The Super Bowl

I just wanted to inform you about the "Super Bowl", which most of my German readers probably never have heard of. It was the biggest footbal game of the year and happended last Sunday night in New Orleans between the San Francisco 49's and the Baltimore Ravens. It was a really exciting game and actually the first Footbal game I watched until the end ;) At least one... Baltimore finally won with a score of 34 to 31, which is not that much more. For everybody without any footbal knowledge: one touch down is 6 points worth and the bonus kick after a touch dow is one point, if they score it. Everything else is to complicated to explain... The thing I actuallly found the most interesting was, that the commercialsduring the game are for many people more important or the same like the actual football game. They start planning them one year in advance and investigate millions in it because he Super Bowl is the most watched game of the entire year. I want to show you one of the most populare once of this year:

Too many things happened...

To start this BIG entry I have to tell you (before I forget about it again), that my mom and dad had have a big surprise for me in the beginning of January... They were booking two flights in May to come for my graduation and stay here for one week! Isn't it great?! Before I was a little upset, that they could come (Yeah, flying by plane is not the cheapest thing in the world...) but now, I'm super happy and can't wait tothe day they are standing in front of my hostfamily's door. It'll be awesome!!

A year with memories

I know that it is a little late for a new years article...  I wrote this article actually more than a week ago down but I couldn't find the time to put it online, yet. So.. there we are; I came more than 4 month ago and it's already 2013. If I was here for only one semester I would have to leave in a couple weeks. I couldn't imagine that!

A different Christmas

As quick as winter was coming with its snow, Christmas was coming with Santa and holidays. I already expected it to be different than other Christmases I had before. Firstly probably because I'm not with my family and friends I'm used to be with together.  But not at least because Christmas here is in some ways just different celebrated than we do it.

Advent, Advent a light is burning?!

I think I can't translate it like that, haha :D

Last Sunday was the first Advent and I chose this heading also because they don't know about the Advent Sundays here or have an "Adventskranz"; which is obviously only  a German/Austrian tradition.

I feel like I should make a list of different Christmas traditions in America:

  1. The Advent is not celebrated here
  2. They don't know anything about "Nikolaus"
  3. Santa Claus is coming at night from Dec. 24th to 25th, so the kids can't open their gifts before the morning.
  4. they don't celebrate the second Christmas day (Dec 26th)
  5. which isn't a tradition but though important in my opinion: their Christmas break is only one week!!

Okay, for the end a little quote (in German) I found on facebook and just had to laugh about it, so I hope you have to laugh about it, too.

"Man steckt immer in der scheiße, nur die Tiefe ändert sich.
Darum, wenn einem die scheiße bis zum Hals steht, nicht den Kopf hängen lassen."

First Dance Performance!!!

Hey guys! School started three days ago and I just can say, that I almost died on Monday, when I had to stand up :O Anyways, yesterday we finally had our first dance performance at the boys basketball game in our school. We performed after the second quarter. I was the entire day really excited about it but right before it more nervous. Some moments I even thought I forgot how the dance begins... When we actually danced everything was so fast and a lot fun! Nevertheless, I was glad to have the first time done :) And I feel like we did a good job!

Our basketball team unfortunately lost, although the team we played against didn't look as good before as they finally were (shorter than us).   The next home game is this Friday, where we perform again

I came home very late on this day and a thing, how I noticed I wouldn't do in Germany, is doing homework until midnight. The matter is: homework is going to be corrected everytime!  Even, if it's only a simple worksheet :O

Thanksgiving Break

Finally there is a break in the school year because of Thanksgiving. Through we don't celebrate this day in Germany there might be some guys who don't know for sure, what that actually is. To leave no open questions I'll give a short explanation for you :)

Thanksgiving is a harvest feast first celbrated by pilgrims and Wampanoags (Native Americans) 1621 in Plymouth, America. It is one of the major holidays in the United States. Today they celebrate it traditionally with a big turkey dinner in the family on the 4th Thursday in November.

So this Thursday (22th November), we're going to have a turkey dinner at the house of my hostmom's stepmom. I think there will be many people. But it'll be fun. I try to take pictures of the dinner. Oh and I shouldn't forget to mention the day after Thanksgiving. It is known as the "Black Friday". It is probably one of the largest shopping days of the year in America. Everything is reduced in its price, even grosheries. Why? I have no clue, if I'm honest :D

Anyway.. I'll go shopping, too but at first for the time seeing all those crazy people who are waiting for that the shops are opening since midnight. It's an event I'll probably not watch in Germany ;)  I even have already some advertisements in my e-mail box: "Visit our stores on Black Friday! Everything at least 50% off."
